Getting back into character

New television series begin this week

"2 Broke Girls" (Airs tonight at 9:30 p.m. on CBS)- NEW - Two broke waitresses — one raised rich, one raised poor — try to join forces and raise $250,000 to open a cupcake shop.

Chirpmeter (3/5)- There could be some interesting economic class commentary made in "2 Broke Girls," but it could just as easily resort to mocking lower class life. This is also competing with several other bigger budget comedies airing on CBS ("Two and a Half Men" and "How I Met Your Mother") so one wonders how much CBS could invest in "2 Broke Girls."

"Glee" (Airs Tuesday at 8 p.m. on Fox)- You know what it is, your friends know what it is, your mom knows what it is; the William McKinley High School Glee Club returns for their senior year.

Chirpmeter (5/5)- See the first sentence? People are pretty excited about this thing.

"Modern Family" (Airs Wednesday at 9 p.m. on ABC)- The relatable dysfunctional family who find their bonds through ironic shortcomings returns for a third season.

Chirpmeter (4.5/5)- The enormously popular show has found love with both critics and audiences alike. Look for it to remain one of the most popular comedy shows on television.

"Grey's Anatomy" (Airs Thursday at 9 p.m. on ABC)- The popular hospital drama returns this fall for its eighth season.

Chirpmeter (3.5/5)- The show has established a loyal following over its eight seasons, and will always generate ratings. At times, it seems the show can fall into typical hospital drama, but overall it is well liked.

"Person of Interest" (Airs Thursday at 9 p.m. on CBS)- NEW - This spy drama focuses on a group that uses cameras around the world to try and predict murders. Early teasers suggest there will be a lot more complication to the plot as the series goes along.

Chirpmeter (3.5/5)- The show is produced by J.J. Abrams ("Lost," "Cloverfield") and written by Jonathan Nolan ("The Prestige," "The Dark Knight"), so obviously interest is very high. The show's plot, though, does seem a little confusing. This could mean that it is a layered and intricate drama that will keep you guessing; but it also could mean "Person of Interest" is just plain confusing. There is certainly reason to be excited, but cautiously so.

"Terra Nova" (Airs Monday Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. on Fox)- NEW - In this Steven Spielberg-produced drama, humans have apparently trashed the planet so badly that scientists have decided to send our race back 85 million years — when dinosaurs ruled the earth.

Chirpmeter (3/5)- As the most expensive show ever made, "Terra Nova" displays eye-popping visual effects. The plot seems a little thin and spotty, with some pretty big holes the episodes will have to fill. For example, why would scientists send us back 85 million years? Did they forget dinosaurs were around back then? Why not a period when there weren't giant man-eating lizards? However, Spielberg's name is attached to the project, so hopes are high.

"American Horror Story" (Airs Wednesday Oct. 5 at 10 p.m. on FX)- NEW - A family moves into an old Los Angeles mansion, but little do they know it's haunted. Little is known about the show, except for a few online video-clip "clues" that are posted throughout the Internet.

Chirpmeter (3.5/5)- With names like Connie Britton ("Friday Night Lights") and Dylon McDermott ("Dark Blue") attached to it, there is certainly a little intrigue. The story itself seems a little decrepit and old, kind of like the mansion the family is moving in to, but maybe the people at FX can cook up some interesting storylines. The presence of creator Ryan Murphy ("Glee," "Nip/Tuck") also generates some interest; let's just hope the writing can follow through.

"The Walking Dead" (Airs Sunday Oct. 16 at 9 p.m. on AMC)- The show based on the best-selling graphic novel series returns this fall. The walking dead have taken over the world, forcing a band of refugees to band together and try to survive this new world and each other.

Chirpmeter (5/5)- The first season of this show was incredibly well received; and with a new budget and larger story arcs, this season promises to be even finer. This show also carries a huge following due to the success of the graphic novels and is sure to translate this excitement into big success.

"Allen Gregory" (Airs Sunday Oct. 30 at 8:30 p.m. on Fox)- NEW - "Allen Gregory" is an animated show where a 7-year-old boy named Allen Gregory (Jonah Hill) lives with his father Richard (French Stewart) and his partner Jeremy (Nat Faxon).

Chirpmeter (3/5)- Not a lot is known about "Allen Gregory." Hill certainly gives the show a star vehicle, and David A. Goodman ("Family Guy") is the executive producing the show. These two names give a reason to watch the pilot, but outside of that, it's hard to know what to think.
