TAMPA – No. 22 South Florida continued its offensive onslaught against Ball State in the second quarter, increasing its lead to 30-0 at halftime.
The Bulls held a 10-point lead after the first quarter, and quickly extended it. Kicker Maikon Bonani kicked his first of two field goals in the quarter just 67 seconds into the period. Bonani would add another field goal with 5:03 to play in the first half.
Sandwiched by Bonani's field goals, running back Demetris Murray ran for a two-yard touchdown. It was just the Bulls' second offensive touchdown of the year, after scoring just one in a 23-20 victory at then-No. 16 Notre Dame last week. The Bulls wouldn't have to wait nearly as long for their third offensive touchdown. Quarterback B.J. Daniels found wide receiver Victor Marc for a 20-yard touchdown pass late in the half.
Ball State's offense has been able get much going. In the first half the Cardinals failed to convert on third-and-one three times, and coach Pete Lembo opted to punt on all three occasions. Quarterback Keith Wenning has led the offense, completing 11 of 17 passes for 55 yards. Ball State's running game, however, has little to show. Sophomore Barrington Scott leads the Cardinals with 14 yards on six attempts.
South Florida quickly has piled up 296 yards of total offense. Daniels has completed 24 of 31 passes for 284 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
