FOOTBALL: Ball State offense explodes in second quarter, takes big lead into halftime

Cardinals have already set season-high for points

A dominant second quarter helped Ball State extend its lead against Army to 31-0 at halftime, its biggest lead of the season.

Keith Wenning threw for two touchdown passes in the quarter and running back Jahwan Edwards added his second touchdown run of the day in the quarter. The Cardinals have already set a season-high for points scored; surpassing the 27 they scored on Opening Night against Indiana.

Edwards' 12-yard touchdown run gave him his second consecutive game with two touchdowns. He has scored five times in the last three weeks.

Wenning threw for the next two scores. First he found sophomore wide receiver Jamill Smith in the corner of the end zone for a three-yard touchdown pass. It was Smith's first career touchdown.

Wenning's second touchdown pass came after a pass interference call negated a touchdown on third down. No matter. Backed up to the 21-yard line and facing third-and-goal, Wenning found freshman wide receiver Willie Snead over the middle for a touchdown. It was the second time in as many weeks the pair hooked up for a touchdown.

Ball State's defense held army in check in the second quarter. Safety Sean Baker snagged his first interception of the season and 17th of his career, improving on the school record he already held.

As the first half ended, Steven Schott added a 21-yard field goal. Schott missed two field goals last week, and is now 3-for-5 on field goal attempts this year.
