Five Student Government Association seats left open

After extending nominations in the hopes of getting more applicants, the Student Government Association still has four freshmen seats and one graduate seat open.

Those who still want to apply don't have much of a chance of getting in this semester, SGA president Kayla Stanton said.

The reason there is a special election for graduate students and freshmen is their lack of records. They don't have a GPA at Ball State or any references from Ball State, so it is harder to see what kind of student they are.

Stanton, along with the rest of the executive board, will meet to discuss possibilities of letting in more freshmen and graduates, but Stanton doesn't think the seats will be filled until next semester when the students have a stronger foundation at Ball State.

For now, SGA has fulfilled its obligation as far as election code goes. It is looking at the possibility of revising the code to make it easier for students to apply.

Stanton understands that SGA may not fill every seat because students have a lot on their minds.

"We understand that students are just now coming in; we understand that they are trying to get reoriented, resituated and that's why there are only eight positions out of an over 50 member Senate," Stanton said.

SGA only opens a small amount of seats for freshmen and graduates at first because they want to see who the motivated students are.

"We think that the really motivated freshmen, the ones that really wanted to get involved, they are going to come out," she said.

That doesn't mean that those who didn't apply won't become influential and motivated members of Senate, Stanton said. It's just SGA's way of seeing who cares the most.

"That doesn't mean the ones that didn't come out aren't motivated, it just means it wasn't on the front of their minds right now," she said.
