Carnivals and Renaissance Fairs, Hogwarts and Disney. The Late Nite committee brings these worlds to Ball State students for free.
While tuition may have increased, the Late Nite group isn't getting a cut of it. The University Program Board uses student fees, but Late Nite is funded through donations, most which come from President Jo Ann Gora, Kelsey McPheeters, administration coordinator for Late Nite, said.
Late Nite events are the alcohol alternatives for Ball State students, McPheeters, junior public relations major, said.
"Late Nite is like a big after-prom that takes over the Student Center," she said.
While each theme has the word "nite" incorporated into their name, they require an initial idea and must survive a vote. Anyone can submit a theme idea for Late Nite at anytime, McPheeters said.
"Near the end of every semester, [the group] takes all the ideas, and the committee and administration board votes for fifteen or sixteen themes," she said.
Late Nite started in 2001. McPheeters said this semester's first Late Nite event was themed to be a ten-year birthday party for the program.
Nicole Wielgos, freshman theatrical studies major, has enjoyed the Late Nite events.
"It's a great way to get together with friends and make some new ones," she said. "My friends and I always have a great time going from activity to activity. We laugh all night long. It's definitely a great alternative to partying and drinking."
McPheeters said this year, the Late Nite committee is trying to coordinate Late Nite themes with activities going on around campus and the world.
"We're trying to increase the wow factor to keep everything fresh and exciting," she said.
