Air Jam and the Student Scholarship Talent Search are two annual Homecoming events that are widely popular throughout campus, and this year the Homecoming Steering Committee believes the events will live up to past standards.
Twenty acts will perform in each event, entertaining the Ball State community through song, dance and skits. Although both events fill up quickly in terms of acts, there are still opportunities for groups and acts to get involved.
Sign up sheets for both events have been available since early September, with Air Jam filling up within the first few hours of sign ups.
Jenny Pyle, Air Jam chairwoman for the committee, said one group was waiting outside of the Alumni Center doors at 4 a.m. to ensure they got their choice of song, as no songs could be repeated this year.
"It seems like people won't wake up for class but they sure will wake up for Air Jam," Pyle said.
Although all 20 spots have been filled, groups can still sign up to participate as alternates in case an act drops out. There are four alternate spots still available. Registration forms are due by Friday at 4 p.m.
Registration for the Student Scholarship Talent Search operates differently than Air Jam, requiring students and groups to audition for their slot in the line-up. Last year, more than 70 individuals or groups auditioned.
Groups can register until 4 p.m. today to secure a spot at auditions. Auditions will be held Monday and Tuesday, with the top 20 acts who will be performing announced on the Homecoming Steering Committee website.
There will be an added feature to this year's talent search. Before each act performs at the event, there will be a short 30-second video introducing the individual or group, in the likes of hit television shows like "So You Think You Can Dance" and "American Idol."
"I'm really looking forward to seeing all of the talent Ball State students have to offer this year. I have a strong feeling that this year's show is going to have some of the best performances yet," Heather Closson, Student Scholarship Talent Search chairwoman, said.
The talent search takes place Oct. 4 in Emens Auditorium. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.
Air Jam is scheduled for Oct. 6 at 9 p.m. with doors opening at 8 p.m. Air Jam will be held in Emens Auditorium as well. Tickets can be purchased at the Emens box office for $8 at the door and $10 that night.
Registration forms for both events can be picked up at the Alumni Association Office, located next to Scheumann Stadium.
