Museum of Art offers Friday meditation

The Ball State Museum of Art is offering something out of the ordinary for students looking to escape from the stress of everyday life.

At 3 p.m. every Friday, the museum offers an hour of self-guided meditation to interested students.

Tania Said, curator of education at the museum, said all in all, the idea is for people to start looking at the museum in a different light.

"We're encouraging people to use the space in a new and different way, and not just as an educational area," she said.

The meditation takes place on the second floor terrace in front of the Buddha statue.

The idea behind this event started a year and a half ago after the museum hosted an exhibit on Japanese art, Said said.

A yoga class sponsored by Working Well was held in the museum, and after receiving positive feedback; the idea for similar events was sparked.

Only a handful of students attend on a regular basis, which Said said might work best with such a limited space.

The museum also makes sure tours are not scheduled during meditation hour.

"If you get there and a group of 5th graders are taking a tour, it's kind of hard to do what you came there to do," Said said.

She said participants usually sit on one of the three benches or on the floor near the Buddha statue. Some bring their own mats.

Even though the meditation is self-guided, there are links to downloadable MP3s on the art museum's website for those who would prefer a guided experience.
