Local, state police to increase patrols

Motorists may notice more police on Indiana roadways in the upcoming weeks.

Law enforcement agencies across the state will increase patrols in an attempt to reduce the number of deaths and injuries this summer, according to a press release.

Police hope to increase their impaired driving patrols through high-visibility enforcement activities such as saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints.

July is one of the deadliest months for Hoosier motorists, according to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. More than 15,000 collisions occurred on Indiana roadways in July 2010.

Even though Indiana has seen a decrease in the number of alcohol-related crashes within the past five years, nearly 5,000 of the collisions in 2010 involved an alcohol-impaired driver, according to the press release.

Research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that impaired driving crashes occur most often during warmer months of the year when travel tends to increase.

The Muncie Police Department, Delaware County Sheriff, Yorktown Police Department, Daleville Police Department and Ball State University Police Department plan to increase patrols in Delaware County.
