INDIANAPOLIS — A contractor inspecting an Indianapolis church's damaged ceiling warned church members to leave the building minutes before its roof and walls came tumbling down.
No injuries were reported in Tuesday's collapse at the Greater New Jerusalem Temple of Truth on the city's east side. Damage was estimated at $500,000.
Contractor Luis Vaz said he heard cracking noises and saw walls being pushed out before he ordered the handful of church members out. He says the roof collapsed less than 15 minutes later.
The Indianapolis Star reports Bishop Herman Davis had notified the church's insurance company that ceiling debris had been dropping into the worship space, but the roof had not been replaced due to a dispute with the company.
