Minnetrista prepares for summer concert season

Local country artists to perform Saturday

Along with the warmer weather, summer brings a crowd of concertgoers, toting lawn chairs and blankets, to Minnetrista's East Lawn.

Minnetrista will kick off its annual Summer Stage Fest with local country artists Greg and Heather Rhodes at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

The couple has been performing together for three years, initially making the decision at the urging of friends and in hopes of strengthening their relationship.

"It just seemed like a natural thing," Heather said.

They started out as an acoustic show, performing mostly with acoustic bands at fairs and festivals across the Midwest. But over the past year they've added their own band of musicians that travel with them.

Prior to the creation of the duo, Greg sang on the fair and festival circuit, opening for artists such as Dierks Bentley and Trick Pony.

Although they classify themselves as country artists, don't assume they have twangy voices and banjos.

"We like to say we're country with an edge," Greg said comparing their style to that of Lady Antebellum and Jason Aldean.

Throughout the summer, Minnetrista will continue its Summer Stage Fest with a variety of musical performances and plays, all of which are free to the public.

America's Hometown Band will perform at Minnetrista's July 4th event, which will include a fireworks show in the evening.

The stage will also host performances of Muncie Civic Theatre's "School House Rock Live! Jr." on July 29 and 30 and the Muncie Symphony Orchestra on Aug. 24.

"It's a way to give the community an opportunity to gather and to experience Minnetrista at a different level than they might have before," Steve Beverly of Minnetrista said.
