SOFTBALL: Gilbert's slam gives Cardinals the win

Freshman drives in all five of Ball State's runs

Leaving runners in scoring position has been a problem for Ball State throughout the season.

On Saturday, the Cardinals finally capitalized on their opportunities.

With two outs in the top of the seventh inning and down 3-1 to Miami, Ball State freshman designated hitter Jennifer Gilbert hit a grand slam to give the Cardinals a 5-3 lead.

Junior right-handed pitcher Kim Mazzapica closed the door on the Redhawks in the bottom of the seventh inning when senior shortstop Meghan Mawn grounded into a game-ending double play.

The win moves Ball State's overall record to 23-14 on the season and 4-1 in Mid-American Conference play.

Gilbert led the way for Ball State, accounting for all five of its RBIs.

Ball State returns to action Sunday, when it plays Miami for a second consecutive day. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
