Muncie residents celebrate St. Patrick's Day at Downtown

Children crawled with joy on the streets of Muncie, frantically grabbing candy during the annual St. Patrick's Day parade downtown.

People crowded along the sidewalks of downtown as far as the eye could see.

The parade kicked off with a police car, the siren wailing loudly throughout the downtown area.

Children pointed out the red and blue lights, jumping up and down in excitement for the start.

Sarah Shaw, a Muncie resident for seven years, brought her children out for the event.

"[We come] because it's a parade, its fun and there's free candy," she said.

The streets were lined with a sea of green, including shirts, hats and beer.

Senior music technology major Trevor Junga said he went with his friends to the Silo to DJ for the evening, but took time to enjoy the parade.

"It's nice and more than I expected," he said.

Local politicians running for office this election year were the biggest part of the parade.

Other notable participants were the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Balloon Gallery, WLBC, Delaware County Democrats, City Council, The Buley Center and a court judge.

The fire truck signaled the end of the parade and the last pieces of candy for the event.

After it was over, the crowd quickly dispersed, off to other evening activities to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

Senior theater major David Guiden said he enjoyed the parade and the atmosphere.

"I'd never really seen St. Patrick's Day celebrations so I came with my friends and got some beer."

Green beer, of course.

"It's fun and the weather helped tremendously," he said. "The night is still young."
