Movie focuses on ending slavery worldwide

The Ball State student organization Free the Slaves will show a documentary on child soldiers in Uganda tonight.

Free the Slaves focuses on ending slavery worldwide.

"We raise money and awareness about modern day slavery," said Chelsey Outcalt, Free the Slaves president.

The documentary discusses the beginnings of the Invisible Children, a group that focuses on Uganda and ending the abduction of children there for child soldiers.

"It's an organization started by three young men a few years back, who went over to Africa to film a documentary," Outcalt said. "They discovered in Uganda the rebel army formed against the government is using children as soldiers to fight."

After the documentary, Jason Powell, an assistant professor of history, will speak about sex slavery.

Outcalt encourages people to attend the showing.

"I really feel that it's something people should be aware of, and a lot of people aren't aware that there are still slaves," she said. "There are more slaves today than ever in history."

Outcalt said she hopes students are more aware of the advantages Americans have in the world after they see the documentary.

"We are fortunate in the U.S. to have all that we have," she said. "We should take advantage of that and pass it on to others who don't have the freedoms we have."

The showing is in preparation for guest speakers on April 26.

"We are having Invisible Children staff come and a former child solider here to speak," she said. "We will show a new documentary based on his life."

The event will also have booths set up for other organizations that are related to human rights issues, and students can learn about the groups as well.

The documentary will be at 7 p.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Room 310 A-B. The guest speakers will be April 26 at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.
