INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Gov. Mitch Daniels is seeking a protective order that would shield him from "burdensome depositions" in two lawsuits over the state's cancellation of a $1.37 billion contract IBM received to modernize Indiana's welfare system.
The Indianapolis Star reports that state attorneys requested a legal order Friday to protect Daniels and chief of staff Earl Goode from providing "unnecessary and burdensome depositions" in the suits.
The state is suing IBM to recover more than $400 million it paid IBM before Daniels canceled the 10-year contract in 2009 amid complaints about the automated welfare system. IBM's countersuit says the state still owes the company about $100 million.
IBM contends Daniels could provide details others couldn't, but the state's attorneys say it's common for high-ranking government officials to stay out of civil suits.
