FOOTBALL: Spring practice opens for Cardinals

Ball State faces competition at quarterback, kicker heading into April

Ball State football begins its spring practice today, which marks the first practice for coach Pete Lembo.

As the team heads into its first spring practice, there are a few issues the Cardinals will hope to resolve.

The biggest concern for Ball State is who will be the starting quarterback for the 2011 season. Junior quarterback Kelly Page started the first two games last season against Southeast Missouri State and Liberty. Sophomore quarterback Keith Wenning was promoted to first string for the third game of the season against Purdue, and started the remainder of the season.

Lembo said he hopes to have a starting quarterback named by the end of April.

Lembo will also have his first opportunity to practice his style of offense with the Cardinals' personnel. Lembo described his offense as a no huddle offense, but not a spread offense. He also said the screen play is an important part of his offensive scheme.

Ball State finished last in the MAC in passing offense with 153.58 yards per game. The leader, Western Michigan, averaged 285.75. In the 2010 season, Lembo's Elon team averaged 322.4 yards per game through the air.

The Cardinals averaged 22 points per game a season ago, compared to Elon's 31.9 points per game.

Another position battle will be the first string place kicker. Without graduate Ian McGarvy, junior Steven Schott and freshman Scott Secor will battle for the starting spot for the 2011 season. Schott saw playing time last year for kickoffs.

Last season, the Cardinals finished the year 4-8 (3-5) in the Mid-American Conference.
