The 8.9 magnitude earthquake that shook Japan's northeastern region Friday did not directly affect four Ball State students studying at inland Japanese universities.
Ball State spokesman Kevin Burke said the students have been accounted for. The Daily News was unable to contact the students because of restrictions with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
The students are studying at different universities that have bilateral exchange programs with Ball State.
One student is studying at Aichi University of Education in Nagoya, southeast of Tokyo. One student is studying at Sapporo University, which is on an island northwest of the main Japanese islands. Two students are studying at Tokyo Gakugei University in Tokyo.
"We're offering them support through e-mail," Kelly Kirkwood, assistant director of study abroad, said. "They're all inland. They felt the earthquake, but there's not damage to the universities."
