The CEO of Burberry and Ball State alumna Angela Ahrendts will visit Ball State to talk about the company's use of social media as a marketing tool tonight.
Ahrendts will address students and faculty at 7 p.m. in Sursa Hall as a part of the David Letterman Distinguished Professional Lecture and Workshop Series.
Lori Byers, associate dean of the College of Communication, Information and Media, said she thinks Ahrendts is an inspiration for students.
"I think she's a really good example of what everyone can be if they put their mind to it," she said.
Ahrendts will speak about her use of social media in marketing and advertising, which enabled Burberry to connect with people on a global scale, Byers said.
Ahrendts visted Ball State asthe Spring Commencement speaker last year.
"What better way than to bring in an alum, who's the CEO of Burberry, and inform our students in advertising, marketing, fashion design, anyone interested in social media, so that includes PR and journalism," Byers said.
Ahrendts graduated from Ball State in 1981 and moved to New York City the day after, according to a TIME magazine article. By 1989 she was appointed as president of Donna Karan and later became executive vice president of Henri Bendel and Liz Claiborne until 2006 when she accepted the position of CEO of Burberry.
The fashion brand last year broke new ground by beaming its runway show from London Fashion Week live and in 3D to multiple locations around the globe. Burberry also is the first luxury brand to attract more than 1 million fans on Facebook.
"Burberry has really made some innovated choices concerning social media and connecting to a more international audience," Byers said.
