Fliers cause ruckus on IU campus

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Police say students who distributed fliers with violent language and blood-like ink spatters on the Indiana University campus claim their so-called "Manifesto (hash) 1" was artistic expression.

Campus police investigated after about 100 fliers were distributed this week at the Radio-Television Center, the Fine Arts Building and the School of Journalism. IU officials contacted police because of violent language in the document, but police said the fliers did not contain any specific threats.

Police tell The Herald-Times the students came forward and acknowledged their responsibility, but said the fliers were intended as an "artistic provocation" meant to challenge the current state of the "art world." The "manifesto" also criticized the Department of Telecommunications, the School of Fine Arts and student media groups.

Police referred the case to administrators for review.
