Ex-Ind. deputy AG says Twitter comments satirical

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A former Indiana deputy attorney general who tweeted that police should "use live ammunition" against Wisconsin labor protesters says his comments were intended to be satirical.

Jeffrey Cox told Indianapolis television station WRTV he realizes the tweet wasn't a good idea, but he doesn't think public employees should lose their free speech rights.

The attorney general's office said Cox "is no longer employed" by the state after Mother Jones magazine reported his tweet. The magazine says the tweet came in response to a Saturday posting on its Twitter feed that riot police could sweep demonstrators out of the Wisconsin capitol where they're protesting legislation to strip public employees of collective bargaining rights.

The attorney general's office says it values employees' First Amendment rights, but public servants should strive for civility.
