Environmental groups challenge I-69 extension path

INDIANAPOLIS — Environmental groups have filed a legal challenge to a section of the Interstate 69 extension project that they say endangers southern Indiana wetlands.

The complaint filed Wednesday by the Hoosier Environmental Council and Citizens for Appropriate Rural Roads seeks to overturn a permit that was issued by the Army Corps of Engineers.

The groups say the permit authorizes the state Department of Transportation to reroute streams and fill in wetlands that would be crossed by the Indianapolis-to-Evansville highway.

If the groups win, they say the state would have to consider alternative routes with less environmental impact, including a route that follows Interstate 70 and U.S. 41.

An INDOT spokesman says the agency is reviewing the complaint and is sure that applicable federal environmental regulations were followed.
