Under new head coach Christine Bader, the women's tennis team has a season ahead full of promise and potential.
Ball State will put its potential to the test as it travels to Dayton, Ohio, to take on Wright State in its season-opening match at 2 p.m. Ball State will then travel to Bloomington to face Indiana on Sunday.
Ball State is a year removed from a disappointing 8-12 season that included a 1-6 record in the Mid-American Conference, numbers the Cardinals will certainly look to improve upon.
Bader said she is excited for the opportunity to make this season a more successful one.
"I'm thrilled I couldn't be more excited to be handed such a great group of girls," Bader said. "I think they have all grown and learned a lot through the fall, so this spring is going to be a really good test for us and a big test for me, too."
Ball State will welcome freshman Kristel Sanders from the Netherlands as the lone newcomer on the team for the 2011 season.
But the biggest newcomer for the Cardinals is their coach.
Bader graduated and played tennis at Michigan State. She previously coached at Evansville for two seasons, compiling a record of 23-18.
The Cardinals will start the season with experience on their side. Katherine Rist was the only player to graduate, and Ball State retained seven players from last season's squad.
Included in those seven players are two mainstays in seniors Hayley Hall and Georgina Thomson, who will certainly be called upon to lead the team in its opening matches.
