Three to six inches of snow expected today

The ice that left students skating down McKinley Avenue on Wednesday could be covered with three to six inches of snow by this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The heaviest snow will fall from sunrise to mid-afternoon, affecting travelers with slippery roads and poor visibility. Temperatures are expected to reach 24 degrees and plummet to 2 degrees in the evening.

Slick roads and sidewalks resulted in 32 incident calls to Muncie Police from around Delaware County on Wednesday, and a half dozen weather-induced injuries were treated at the Amelia T. Wood Health Center.

Lori Cox, an afternoon supervisor at the Muncie Police Department, said of the 32 calls made between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., only four of them were significant — one rollover, one entrapment, one pedestrian accident and one personal injury. The rest were counts of property damage.

Around campus, students seemed to fare a little better.

Medical director Kent Bullis said most of the weather-related injuries treated at the Health Center are from students who slip and fall on their way to campus, either on a sidewalk or icy staircase.

"The university does a pretty incredible job of cleaning the sidewalks," he said.

Most of the cases were fairly minor Wednesday — sprains, strains and bruises. Bullis said one student chipped a tooth, but he didn't treat the student and could not comment further.

Bullis said he was expecting more injuries based on the icy conditions that remained throughout the day.
