INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana's unemployment rate dropped to 9.5 percent for December, giving the state its lowest jobless figure since early 2009.
The employment report released Tuesday by the state Department of Workforce Development showed Indiana's jobless rate down from 9.8 percent in November. The report says about 284,000 Hoosiers were looking for work last month, down about 11,000 from November.
The national unemployment rate for December was slightly lower than Indiana at 9.4 percent.
Indiana workforce development Commissioner Mark Everson says that during 2010 the state saw employment growth in manufacturing and professional and business services, but a decline in construction.
Elkhart County at 12.8 percent and Fayette and Vermillion counties at 12.5 percent had the state's highest December jobless rates. The statewide unemployment rate peaked at 10.6 percent in June 2009.
