Ball State sorority to hold second annual Fur Ball

Members of Epsilon Sigma Alpha are hosting their second annual Fur Ball to help raise money for the Muncie Animal Rescue Fund.

The event will take place Wednesday from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Student Center Ballroom. The admission is free, but donations such as money, pet toys and pet food are accepted.

Audreyalice Kubesch, an ESA member, said the event was created last year by alumna Wendy Carter to help ARF when they had to take in pets after the Muncie animal shelter shut down. Kubesch said they are expecting about 200 participants -- as many as they had last year.

"Last year we were very successful, we charged $2 for [admission]," she said. "This year we received money from [Student Government Association] so we are not charging an entrance fee, but we are having a silent auction that will serve as a fundraiser."

Pets are not allowed to the Fur Ball. However, ESA had online contests for the cutest pet and a pet and owner look alike. Students could submit entries through Facebook and will receive results at Wednesday's event. There will also be a "best dressed" contest at the Fur Ball.

"We'll have some students dressed in animal prints -- not real ones obviously," ESA member Brittany Brewer said. "We'll also have an amazing DJ that's from Indy and food."

Kubesch said as a pet owner she thought helping ARF was good service for the sorority.

"I'm a pet owner myself, I rescued my dog about a year ago and thinking about helping other pets is exciting," she said. "I think students on campus get excited with helping animals. I think service is something very important for our generation."

Brewer said the sorority is hoping to raise more money than last year.

"Last year we raised about $300, and this year it's free, but we're getting a lot of support from campus," she said. "We're hoping for a lot of support from students on campus. Hopefully we will become an annual event."

Brewer said her favorite part about putting together the event is the final result.

"I like to think about how much impact I've made in helping out the organization I'm supporting," she said. "We hope a lot of people can make it tomorrow and give us a lot of support."
