Former White House staff member to visit Ball State

James Capretta, former associate director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, will visit Ball State University to speak with students about health care reform.

Through his present work with the Ethics and Public Policy Center, according to the organization's website, Capretta "studies and provides commentary on a wide range of public policy and economic issues, with a focus on health-care and entitlement reform, U.S. fiscal policy and global population aging."

Capretta will speak at 7 p.m. tonight in Teachers College Room 101. The event is free and open to all students.

"Health care reform has been a hot-button issue for some time now, and understanding the public policy reasons behind it is very important to all Americans," Pi Sigma Alpha President Whitney Coffin said. "Students should come to the event because whether or not they follow politics, it affects everyone. It is becoming increasingly crucial to become informed of issues and understand how it affects one's life." Pi Sigma Alpha is co-sponsoring the event with Gamma Delta Pi and the Miller College of Business.

Gamma Delta Pi President Joshua Hofstetter agreed and said it's important for people to be educated on this topic, especially with the present changes in health care.

"It's an important topic because it is a topic that affects us all as citizens of the United States," he said. "We will be feeling the affects not only now, but for most of the next decade as sections of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act are implemented. As such, it's important that we as Americans stay informed on the topic."
