Constructing and collecting to better Muncie

Greek organizations and residence halls created unique constructions with more than 1,200 canned goods collected for charity.

For the past two weeks, student groups have collected canned goods to donate to Muncie Mission. Before sending the cans off, students built constructions, which were then judged on CANstruction creativity.

A total of four CANstructions were created, all designed around the theme of "Holiday Hoo-rah."

Ten organizations participated for the third annual CANstruction charity competition, which changed this year. For the first time, residence halls were allowed to participate.

Mark Mosias, Interfraternity vice president of community outreach, said he hopes residence hall participation will help the number of participants rise each year.

"Last year, there were approximately 200 [participants]," Mosias said. "About 300 to 350 participants came this year. Hopefully it will be bigger and better next year."

Mosias also said he thought the participation was higher because it was held at a more centralized location. Last year, the CANstruction competition was held on Riverside Avenue.

FIJI and Chi Omega teamed together to build a nutcracker out of their collected canned goods. Other CANstructions included a turkey, presents and Santa's sleigh.

Participants abided by two rules:: no glue or duct tape and stay within the designated space.

At the end of the day, organizations tore down their constructions and loaded them into the Muncie Mission truck.

On Saturday, Greek organizations were at the Marsh Supermarkets on McGalliard Road from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. for Stuff the Bus, where students collected more than 600 canned food items and around $600 in donations.

"It was really surprising and a huge accomplishment," said Jordan Amor, Panhellenic Council vice president for philanthropy and community service.

Amy Vargas, member of Phi Mu and Stuff the Bus participant, said it is important for Ball State students to participate in food drives.

"It is good to show that the Greek community reaches out to the Muncie community and not just the Ball State campus," Vargas said.
