A group of students from the Department of Art showcased a semester worth of work Thursday night, opening an exhibit at the Art Gallery in the Art and Journalism Building.
Attendees at the reception listened to Keisha Cook and Hongtaek Lim from the School of Music perform part of the opera "L'amico Fritz," which the paintings were based on.
The students worked on the project as part of a collaboration with assistant professor of voice Joseph Levitt from the School of Music, painting backgrounds for the performance of the opera "L'amico Fritz" by Pietro Mascagni. Students performed the opera in April 2010 at Sursa Hall.
Students learned how to mix powdered pigments to make their own paint, a technique they had to learn within the semester to apply it to their work, Scott Anderson, associate professor of art, said.
Every student in the art class had the opportunity to make their own maquette and present it to the rest of the class. The class collectively selected the design that worked best with the opera.
"They enjoyed it a lot. The theater paid for the expenses, so they got to work on this massive scale," Anderson said. "And it was collaborative, so they had to work together and make choices."
Kyle Holster, senior art education major, said he thought getting the chance to work with different textures and in a group gave him a good experience.
"It was a great way to experiment," he said. "Especially for me being an educator, with works being done in the classroom, that was a great way to think of possible lessons plans, of working in collaboration."
After being displayed at the gallery, the paintings will be given back to the students.
"These paintings were made for a one-time performance and so we wanted to show them so people give them a second look at," Anderson said.
