Woman surrenders in police officer's fatal hit-and-run

NEW CASTLE — A woman who was driving a car that struck and killed an Indiana police officer as he rode his bicycle at night has surrendered to authorities.

Attorney Steven Litz says 59-year-old Sue Ann Vanderbeck of Indianapolis turned herself in about 5 p.m. Monday at the Henry County Jail in New Castle. Jail personnel say she was booked on a charge of failure to stop after a fatal accident and was released on bond.

WTHR-TV first reported her surrender.

Greenfield police officer William Phillips was on an exercise ride with two other officers on an unlit stretch of U.S. 40 about 25 miles east of Indianapolis when he was hit early Thursday.

Litz says his client was distracted by one of her children and didn't stop because she panicked.
