In its final game of the season against Toledo, the Ball State soccer team isn't playing for conference titles or a chance at the postseason.
"It's about setting the standard for Ball State soccer for years to come," senior midfielder Cortney Coombs said.
Coombs said coach Craig Roberts has been discussing the importance of today's 3 p.m. game during practice.
"We need to set the bar high for next year," she said. "When the team plays Toledo next season, they need to have ownership of this win."
Toledo locked up the regular season Mid-American Conference championship last weekend, but a win in Thursday's match would make them 11-0 in conference play. It would mark the first time in league history a team finished league play undefeated.
After a disappointing MAC season, the Cardinals are still searching for their first win.
"Every year we play Toledo it is a physical battle," Coombs said. "We have a lot of respect for the way they play the game. There will be a lot of emotions on both side of the ball, so it should be fun to watch."
Coombs is one of six seniors on the team. Danielle Rogers transferred from Tennessee-Martin before the season, but the other five combined for 32 wins during their four-year careers.
Coach Craig Roberts said this group of seniors has been crucial in every game's performance.
Coombs isn't quite sure what to expect for her final game as a Cardinal.
"When you first come in, no one can explain to you what playing your last game feels like," Coombs said. "In years past, I didn't know when I would play my last game of the season, but this time I did. It has been a mixture of emotions from all the seniors."
