SOCCER: Ball State loses fifth-straight MAC game

Cardinals feel close to a breakthrough

Miami crossed up Ball State's defense through the air on its way to a 3-1 victory Friday.

All three of the Redhawks' goals came off corner kicks or crosses through the box. Midfielder Sam Whitmore challenged the Cardinals all game with balls over the top, tallying two assists in the process.

"We were concerned about [crosses] and addressed the threats with our team going into the game," Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. "Our players didn't pick up balls in the air and we paid for our mistakes. Their players were very talented in that area and dominated the game."

Despite the aerial advantage, Ball State (6-7, 0-5) still had its chances. Midfielder Sarah Orisich's breakaway in the box lacked a finishing touch, while forward Tina Vannatta's free kick was barely tipped out of bounds.

Miami goalkeeper Kris Gasparovic countered the pressure with nine saves. The Cardinals' lone goal came on a Vannatta shot from 35 yards out that found the back post.

The RedHawks maintained their lead in the Mid-American Conference East Division, improving to 3-1-1.

The teams were even throughout in the statistical battle, but it was the same old story for Ball State.

"We made a lot of good offense we just weren't consistent finishing our chances," sophomore defender Skylar Chew said. "We outshot them again, but we had a couple breakdowns in our defense and that was it."

Players and Roberts were disappointed but shook off the loss with a positive outlook. After another good performance, they said it was only a matter of time until everything comes together.

Ball State previewed some of their players of the future throughout the contest. Freshmen forward Robyn Miley and defender Kelsey Shapiro played significant minutes and created many chances for the home squad.

"After the game, I told Robyn this was her best performance of the season to date," Roberts said. "The future looks bright in terms of our freshmen."

Injuries to seniors Cortney Coombs, Missy Gordon and sophomore Abby Milillo during the game forced younger players into action. Underclassmen will most likely be asked to fill roles in Sunday's match against Bowling Green as well.

"It is nice to have younger players step up with our seniors hurt," Roberts said. "It looks good for next year having our freshman come in and gain experience."
