Riverside Avenue taken over by racing beds Friday

In its 31st year, the annual Ball State Bed Race competition returns to campus Friday.

The bed race is a competition that involves pushing a mattress attached to wheels down Riverside Avenue. Teams are made up of five people — four push the bed while one rides on it. Two teams compete at a time on a 100-yard stretch down Riverside.

This high-energy event always brings a large crowd, said Chanel Richards, chairwoman of the Homecoming Steering Committee.

"It is really funny to see people pushing beds down the street with others riding on them," she said.

Lily Barker, Bed Race chairmwoman, said the steering committee is expecting around 1,000 students, faculty and alumni to line the streets this afternoon to cheer on competitors.

There are 46 teams competing in this year's event, an increase from the 39 teams at last year's Bed Race.

Richards said the event will start at 12:30 p.m., which is a change from the traditional noon start time. The change will allow students who have class to still be able to catch parts of the event, she said.

This year's competitors may see their faces on national TV, as Fox Sports will be airing the event coverage produced by Ball State Sports Link.

Fox Sports is providing a helmet cam to be worn for the opening race between Ball State athletics and Sports Link, Barker said.

"It is a really exciting environment," she said. "[It] is a great way to round out the week."
