Recreation Center offers variety of programs

Ball State students and faculty can experience the art of Pilates, cycling and even learn the skill of fly-tying through instructional classes being offered by the Student Recreation and Wellness Center throughout the semester.

Graduate assistant Mallory Blocher said the purpose of these instructional classes is to boost confidence and broaden the horizons of participants.

"It's an additional benefit to programs that we have here," Blocher said. "People will gain self-esteem and confidence. It's a new challenge, so it's more than just a fitness class."

One of the instructional classes, "Women on Weights," is focused on increasing women's confidence in a weight-room environment.

"It's for women to learn how to use the things they have around them in the weight room," Blocher said. "It's more stereotypical that a man would know how to use a piece of machinery, and it's a way for [women] to get knowledge of the machines."

The instructional cycling class, Blocher said, is for cyclists of all experience levels. In addition to 40 minutes of cycling, the course incorporates 20 minutes of weight training per class.

Josh Bisher, senior program director for Recreation Services, said participants gain a greater understanding in a particular class than they would with regular participation in standard fitness classes.

"People take our fitness classes and those are beginner and novice level. They don't go very in depth," he said. "Most of our courses are five to seven weeks long and build every week so they'll be as masterful as they can in the class compared to one of our regular fitness classes where it's just to ‘come in and get a workout.'"

The fly-tying class teaches participants the art of hand crafting the artificial fishing lures used in fly fishing. The class is part of the Outdoor Pursuits program. Bisher said the program may offer backpacking, outdoor cooking and bike workshops in the future.

Bisher said students have the opportunity to influence future programs if enough interest is expressed.

"We're up for any kind of feedback," he said. "We're always taking suggestions, not only for how to promote but what classes to offer."

Registration for Pilates classes ends today, while registration for Fly-Tying classes ends Oct. 15. The deadline for Women on Weights is Oct. 20.
