FIELD HOCKEY: Ball State comes up empty during weekend

Cardinals drop a pair of games

Ball State lost to Ohio and Kent State this weekend in a pair of games at the BSU Turf Field.

The Cardinals started the weekend with a 3-1 loss to the Bobcats on Friday.

Ohio opened up scoring with a goal by Jessica Jue, for which Taylor Brown earned the assist. It was Jue's 11th goal of the season.

Junior midfielder Devanny Kuhn scored Ball State's lone goal to tie the game at 14:27. Gretchen Lulow assisted her.

It would be all Bobcats the rest of the way. Ohio's final two goals came off penalty corners. Taylor Brown scored both goals with assists from Paige Herr and Jenna Green.

Ball State's defense did what it could to keep the Cardinals in the game. Chelsea Mitchell had a game-high 12 saves. Also helping out on defense was Maura Sawicki with four defensive saves and Lulow, who had one defensive save.

On Sunday, Ball State hosted Kent State for the team's "Think Pink" game. The Golden Flashes were able to come away with a 7-4 victory.

A penalty stroke goal started off the scoring for Kent State forward Debbie Bell. Bell was last week's Co-Offensive Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Kuhn.

Midfielder Rachel Miller extended the Golden Flashes' lead to 2-0.

Ball State would make a comeback, starting with a CJ Hermes goal. After halftime, Lulow tied the game with a goal on a penalty stroke. Then Kuhn gave the Cardinals their only lead of the day after a penalty corner.

But Ball State couldn't hold the advantage. Kent State rallied back, scoring the next five goals. Carla Johl scored two, with Miller, Rebecca Lee and Nicole Leach each adding one.

During Sunday's game, donations were accepted to raise money for the Cancer Center at Ball Memorial Hospital as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness month.
