Ball State senior Rachael Pruett earned her first victory of her career Tuesday in the Cardinal Classic, helping the Cardinals place third in the 14-team field.
Western Michigan won the tournament, Ball State's only home competition this fall, with an overall score of 596. Southern Illinois finished second with 601.
The Cardinals moved from seventh to third after shooting a second-round 298 to total 606 for the event. A 298 is the team's best first-round score this year.
Pruett shot a second-round 70 to finish two-under par to finish with an overall score of 142. It was the final round's lowest score.
"Rachael played excellent golf and had very steady play," Coach Katherine Mowat said. "It's a special honor to win a college tournament."
Ohio and Western Michigan were tied for first with a score of 297 after the tournament's opening day. Southern Illinois (299), California University of Pennsylvania (300), IUPUI (306) and Eastern Kentucky (307) rounded off the top six.
Ball State's next competition is Saturday at Penn State in the Nittany Lion Invitational. Cardinals' senior Brittany Kelly, who placed third on the team and tied for 12th overall with a score of 151, said her team is confident entering the tournament.
"We should be prepared for Penn State," she said. "It is going to be a bit more challenging, but we can score (well) there."
