Time for students to bust out at the 38th annual Watermelon Bust

With school in session for six weeks now, students are ready to let loose at the 38th-annual Watermelon Bust, sponsored by Alpha Chi Omega and Delta Tau Delta.

Registration begins at 11 a.m. with the games starting at noon. Students will still be able to register on Saturday.

The event has a long-standing tradition featuring its main event, busting watermelons. With a watermelon theme, other events include the dunk tank where students can "dunk a Delt."

Mark Mosias, vice president of community outreach for the Interfraternity Council, said this year will be a little different.

"We had to move the event [from LaFollette Field to West Campus Field] because of the construction, but since it is such an ongoing fun event everyone gets involved in, we hope it won't be an issue," Mosias said.

The watermelon theme is still going strong, he said.

"We have a watermelon eating competition, seed spitting, seed throwing and we have older events like last year like tug-of-war, relay, obstacle course," Mosias said. "By adding new events and keeping older events, the depth of the Watermelon Bust will keep us going for hopefully another 30 or 40 years."

Alpha Chi Omega and Delta Tau Delta have worked closely together to make sure the event goes smoothly, and Mosias said the entire project was a group effort.

"Working with them is a complete pleasure," he said. "Even before the event, we have social events so we can get to know each other, it's such a positive experiences and we become one cohesive unit working together."

For students interested in going to the Watermelon Bust, it is $50 for a team of six with registration beginning at 11 a.m. at West Campus Field, across from Ball Memorial Hospital on University Avenue.

All proceeds go to the organizations philanthropies: Adopt a School and A Better Way.
