Student Government Association introduces new freshman senators

Student Government Assocation welcomed six new freshmen to its senate on Wednesday.

340 members of the freshman class, representing 10 percent of the freshmen population, participated in the Internet-based vote for this year's freshmen election.

"The turnout was typical for freshmen elections. Since we did it differently this year, I think for future elections will be better," said Whitney Hamblin, SGA vice president.

SGA President Matt Whitlock said the participation met his expectations.

"You don't start something the first year and have 100 percent turnout," Whitlock said.

Wednesday will be a busy day for SGA. The senate will look to approve bylaw revisions dealing with organizational caucus seats, which caused issues during the last school year. Whitlock will give his monthly platform update at next week's meeting.

"I think people are going to be a little bit surprised with our progress," he said. "We are waiting on one meeting to be scheduled for September to be finished. We also have moved forward in some of the areas in November and December."
