Homecoming candidates danced their way down the catwalk Wednesday at the Homecoming fashion show, many of them dressed according to this year's homecoming theme — Rock the Red.
Upbeat rock music played in the background as the candidates flaunted their showy and often silly costumes.
Meaghan Sigman, Homecoming Publicity chairwoman, said she was happy with how the event went.
"The turnout was about average as every other year and we had some really great candidates participating," she said.
Some of the candidates modeled themselves after more recent pop culture. Some couples were Britney Spears and K-Fed, Justin Bieber and Hannah Montana, Tommy and Angelica from the
Nickeldeon show "The Rugrats", Woody and Bo-Peep, Mad Hatter and Alice, Edward and Bella, Meredith and McDreamy, Juno and Bleeker, and Dora and Diego.
Senior art education major Kyle Holster and senior family studies major Kim Richardson, representing the National Residence Hall Honorary, dressed as Woody and Bo-Peep from "Toy Story."
"We chose to dress as Woody and Bo-Peep because we haven't seen it done before," Richardson said.
Other candidates modeled themselves after older pop culture, including Hootie and the Blowfish, Jessica and Roger Rabbit, Sonny and Cher, Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor, Pocahontas and John Smith, Mario and Peach, Marilyn Monroe and James Dean, and Elvis and Priscilla Presley.
In the end, the University Singers won the Best Dressed category for their costumes based on the show "19 Kids and Counting."
During the show, the top 10 student Homecoming king and queen candidates were introduced.
"We were happy to see some of our friends make the top 10," Holster said.
The master of ceremonies, Savannah Teegarden, announced that the online voter turnout was higher than in previous Homecoming elections. Shesaid 4,220 people voted online for the Homecoming royalty.
