WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Shondell hires former Ball State player Carlin as assistant coach

A new assistant coach will be hired just in time to begin practice for first-year women's volleyball coach Steve Shondell.

Corey Carlin was hired by Shondell and Ball State University on Friday, less than one week before the start of its preseason training camp.

Carlin spent the last two seasons as the top assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky University. He takes over the Ball State assistant coach position that opened after Marci Peniata left to become an assistant coach at St. Cloud State University on July 7.

Carlin, a former men's volleyball player and 1998 graduate of Ball State, has in the past expressed interest to in returning to Muncie.

After graduating Carlin became an assistant three schools including the University of Evansville and Austin Peay State University before becoming the head coach at Austin Peay. Carlin went 14-45 in two seasons at Austin Peay.

Carlin left Austin Peay after the 2006 season and co-found the MidSouth Volleyball Academy in Russellville, Ky., where he oversaw administrative components including recruiting coaches, conducting practice sessions and scheduling tournaments.

Carlin returned to the collegiate level as an assistant coach under Lori Duncan at Eastern Kentucky in 2008.
