INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana's outspoken state schools chief plans to meet with teachers around the state to discuss new school policies, including changes that have drawn criticism from some educators.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett has planned nine meetings from Aug. 4-13 to discuss education issues including teacher evaluations, teacher licensing standards and a grading system for schools.
Many teachers objected to new licensing standards and to issuing schools letter grades on an A-to-F scale based on student performance.
The meetings this week and next are a chance for the first-term superintendent Bennett to smooth out relations with Indiana teachers while explaining and providing details of the new policies.
Bennett, a Republican, had 51 percent of the total vote to defeat Democrat Richard Wood in the 2008 election for state superintendent.
