Ball State to charge 20 cents for water, ice at on-campus eateries

The cost to get water at Ball State University dining venues has just gone up for the upcoming semester.

Ball State Dining Services announced Monday that it will begin to charge a minimal 20 cent fee for cups of water or ice for customers who do not purchase any other items at the on-campus eateries.

Dining Services stated in a campus-wide e-mail that the new charge is to cover the increasing cost of cups, lids and straws.

Ice and water will remain free for customers who make an additional purchase or if a person uses their own container. Prior to this decision, water and ice were free for customers regardless if they made another purchase.

This is the second time in the last five years Ball State has charged for cups of water and ice at its dining facilities.

The university had a 25 cent fee for cups of water in the fall 2005 regardless if any other purchase was made. The policy was overturned after a couple of months.
