Two late-round birdies were all Rachael Pruett needed to move up the leaderboard and finish two shots out of first entering the final day a state-wide tournament.
Pruett, a senior on the Ball State University women's golf team, shot a 2-under-par 70 in the second round Tuesday in Anderson to jump into third place at the Indiana Women's Golf Association State Amateur Championship.
After shooting an even-par on the front nine, Pruett birdied the 15th and 17th holes — the two par-three holes on the back nine of the course — to move to 2-over-par for the tournament. Pruett entered the day tied for 13th place with a 4-over-par opening round.
As a junior at Ball State last season, Pruett was selected to the all-conference team and finished in fifth place at the Mid-American Conference Championships in May.
Michele Nash, a member of the Butler University women's golf team, shot a round-low 5-under-par 69 to move into first place at even-par. First-round leader Milena Savich fired a second-round 73 to drop back into second place at 1-over-par.
If Pruett is able to win it will be the second consecutive year a Ball State golf has won the title.
Senior Brittany Kelly, who is not competing in this year's tournament, shot an even-par to win the 2009 State Amateur Championship by five shots. Pruett finished that tournament tied for fifth place at 10-over-par, and Cain ended in ninth place at 12-over-par
Pruett is the only Ball State golfer within five shots of the lead entering the final 18 holes.
Former Ball State golfer Kristtini Cain, who entered the day tied for third place, shot a 5-over-par 77 in her second round move back into a four way tie for seventh place at 6-over-par. In addition, junior Katie Windlan is tied for 11th place at 7-over-par, and sophomore Autumn Duke is tied for 28th place at 14-over-par.
