A 4-under-par on the front nine in the final round helped lead a member of the Ball State University men's golf team to win a state-wide tournament.
Incoming freshman Tyler Merkel shot a 5-under-par 67 in the last round to win the 2010 McDonald Amateur on Sunday in Evansville.
Merkel entered the final round tied for first place and finished the tournament 11-under-par, three shots of ahead of the two players tied for second place.
Merkel opened his round 1-under-par through the first five holes, including a birdie on the second hole. However, the tournament's defending champion was then able to birdie three of the next four holes to extend his lead.
A double-boggy on the 13th hole was the only hole Merkel did not at least par the round.
The McDonald Amateur was a two-day event at the McDonald Golf Course. The tournament had five flights — including the championship division that featured Merkel and 18 other golfers.
This is the second major Indiana tournament this summer Merkel has finished in the top 10. The incoming freshmen finished tied for eighth place with 2-over-par at the Indiana Amateur Championship.
