Muncie to hold its first summer music feast this weekend

If Muncie Gras was not enough for Muncie residents and Ball State students, MAX Fat Summer Fest is expected to bring much of the same fun to the start of summer.

The MAX Fat Summer Fest will be held this Saturday in downtown Muncie. This is the first year for the summer music event.

Similar to Muncie Gras, Fat Summer Fest is an event that people won't want to miss, program director of Muncie Downtown Development Partnership Cheryl Crowder said.

The new summer festival features two live music stages (MAX and FM), plenty food and drinks and lots of adult, silly fun, Crowder said.

"This should be a really fun day for everyone," she said.

The event will also feature some interactive games. For example, attendees can roll around in a giant hamster ball, ride giant tricycles, play beach volleyball, race a friend in the inflatable obstacle course and beat the "waves" on a mechanical surfboard.

In addition to bands performing on the main stages, two downtown businesses will also have bands playing during the festivities.

Crowder said the community has been asking for a summer event, like Muncie Gras, for years. She said that so far the buzz about Fat Summer Fest is a good one and that people seem to be really excited for some summer fun.

"Fat Summer Fest fills that request," Crowder said. "Most of the chatter I've heard [about Fat Summer Fest] has been good."

However, Crowder said it will take some time for the event to gain as much popularity as other downtown Muncie events.

"It takes a little time for events like this to get a little steam under it," Crowder said.
