The potential battle of the Shondell's match will not happen this upcoming season.
Purdue University and Dave Shondell released its 2010 women's volleyball schedule earlier this week, which did not include a match against Shondell's brother and first-year Ball State University head coach Steve Shondell.
This is the first time in three years that Ball State and Purdue will not play each other in a non-conference match. The Boilermakers have swept the Cardinals in both matches the last two seasons.
Purdue returns 11 players in 2010 after it finished 14-17 last season and failed to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003. In his eight seasons with the Boilermakers Dave Shondell has a 138-92 career record.
Ball State finished last season 15-16 and lost in the Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinals. Steve Shondell was hired as the Cardinals' head coach in April after former head coach Dave Boos resigned to accept an assistant coaching position at the University of Florida.
Prior to coaching at Ball State, Steve Shondell had won 13 consecutive state girl's volleyball championships at Burris Laboratory School — a Muncie high school located next to Ball State's campus.
With Steve Shondell being hired late in the off-season much of the Cardinals' 2010 schedule was decided before he was named the coach.
Ball State does not have set timetable to release its schedule, but Steve Shondell said in an interview about two weeks ago that the schedule is almost finished.
Dave and Steve Shondell are also the sons of Hall of Fame Ball State men's volleyball coach Don Shondell. In addition, both coaches played for their father at Ball State and were all-conference players.
