WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Packard promotes Corbin to assisant coach for Ball State

Former Ball State University women's basketball all-conference player Kelsey Corbin took the next step in the evolution of her basketball career Wednesday afternoon.

Ball State coach Kelly Packard was in need of a new assistant coach. She didn't have to look far as she tapped Corbin for the position.

Corbin served as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Cardinals the last three seasons after being hired by then-Ball State coach Tracy Roller in 2007.

When former associate head coach Lisa McDonald left the program in April to pursue other opportunities near her hometown of Flagstaff, Ariz., and assistant coach Carter Shaw was released earlier this month the door opened for Corbin to take on a new role.

"Kelsey has a great future as a collegiate coach, and she has earned this opportunity to step into her on-floor coaching role here at Ball State," Packard stated in a press release released Wednesday afternoon. "Kelsey has a pure testimony which is invaluable to our program in the recruiting realm — she chose Ball State as her collegiate home. Her passion, loyalty, and belief in the direction of our program are visible on a daily basis."

Corbin graduated from Ball State in 2007. In her four-year career she posted more 1,000 points, 400 rebounds and 400 assists. She was the first player in the program's 35-year history to record those numbers.

Corbin was also a team captain for three years. As a senior in 2007 Corbin averaged 12 points and 4.8 assists a game.

"I have learned a great deal during my time at Ball State and I feel truly blessed to start my collegiate coaching career under Coach Packard," said Corbin in the press release. "For two years now, I have witnessed Kelly's passion and commitment to lead young women in a healthy environment."

Packard and Corbin were both unavailable for further comment on Wednesday.
