WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State hires former standout player Corbin as assistant coach

A former all-conference Ball State University women's basketball player was named the Cardinals assistant coach for the upcoming season.

Kelsey Corbin was promoted to assistant coach Tuesday after serving as the team's director of women's basketball operations for the last three seasons.

Corbin was a starting guard from 2003-07 and became the first Ball State player to have 1,000 career points, 400 career rebounds and 400 career assists in the program's 35-year history. As a senior, she also helped the team win the Mid-American Conference West Division title and advance to the Women's National Invitation Tournament for the first time in five years.

After graduating in 2007, Cobrin was hired by then-head coach Tracy Roller to the team's director of the operations. Corbin was retained in that position when head coach Kelly Packard took over the program in 2008.

Two Ball State assistant coaches have either been released or resigned following the Cardinals going 14-17 and losing in the MAC Tournament quarterfinals in the 2009-10 season.

Carter Shaw was released earlier this month after being an assistant coach during Packard's first two years with Ball State.

In addition, Lisa McDonald resigned in April to pursue opportunities closer to her hometown of Flagstaff, Ariz. McDonald had coached at Ball State for nine seasons and was a candidate for the head coaching position when Roller resigned at the end of the 2007-08 season.
