TRACK AND FIELD: Ball State's Johnson gets invite to NCAA Regionals

Ball State University senior Katie Johnson is returning to the track and field NCAA Regionals.

Johnson was selected Friday to compete in the 100-meter hurdles race at regionals for the third time in her four-year college career.

Johnson won the Mid-American Conference title in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 13.71 earlier this month. That time also helped her earn the No. 43 seed out of the 48 runners competing in the 100-meter hurdles.

With the NCAA moving from four to two regionals this year, Johnson will compete in the East Region in Greensboro, N.C. this weekend.

The previous two years Johnson competed in the NCAA Mideast Regional and has finished out of the top 15 both times.

In the 2008 regionals Johnson run the 100-meter hurdles in a career-best time of 13.61 to finish in 21st place. She also finished the same event in 18th place last season with a time of 13.86.

The first round of the 100-meter hurdles will begin at 5 p.m. Friday and will be comprised of six heats. The top three runs from each heat and the next six runners with the best times will advance to one of the three quarterfinals race at 7:20 p.m. Saturday.

Runners finishing in the top three at the quarterfinals and the next three fastest runners will advance to the NCAA Championships.
