TRACK AND FIELD: Ball State senior wins individual title as team struggles in MAC Championships

A Ball State University senior won an individual title at the outdoor track and field conference championships for the second time in her career.

Senior Katie Johnson won the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 13.71 at the Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday in Buffalo, N.Y.

This was the second time Johnson had won the 100-meter hurdles title. As a sophomore in 2008, Johnson won the title, but she finished in second-place behind teammate Amber Williams in last season's conference championship meet.

Johnson was also one of two Cardinals selected to the all-conference team. Johnson was named to the First Team All-MAC, and senior Jenna Schmitmeyer was named to the Second Team All-MAC.

Schmitmeyer finished the 400-meters in second place with a career-best time of 1:00.86.

Schmitmeyer and Johnson had 18 of Ball State's 26 points on the final day of the three-day meet.

The Cardinals finished the MAC Championships in 10th place out of 12 teams with 38 points. Kent State University won the conference championship with 142 points — 38 more points than second-place University of Akron.
