SOFTBALL: Ball State donates $1,400 to local Indiana cancer center

A non-profit Indiana cancer center received a check worth more than $1,000 from the Ball State University softball team on Thursday.

The Cardinals donated $1,400 to the Cancer Services of East Central Indiana, Inc. — Little Red Door after raising the money through an online auction and game day activities in April.

A majority of the money raised came from a two-week online auction on the Ball State athletics department's website that featured donated items such as an autographed photo of Olympic softball pitcher Jennie Finch and three Vera Bradley bags.

In addition, Ball State made its home game against the University of Toledo on April 25 a Think Pink game to raise breast cancer awareness. The Cardinals wore pink jerseys — which were then sold in the online auction — pink socks and pink ribbons in the 13-12 victory.

Ball State also sold pink flower leis and baked goods made by the players at the Think Pink game to raise additional money for Little Red Door.

This is the most money a Ball State team has raised for a non-profit organization in the last three years.

The Little Red Door helps patients from East Central Indiana reduce the physical and financial struggles of a cancer diagnosis. The local agency also does not receive funding and is not affiliated with the American Cancer Society.

Ball State made this donation less than one week after its season ended in the NCAA Regionals. The Cardinals finished the year with the program record for most wins in a single season and won their first Mid-American Conference championship in 12 years.
