SOCCER: Ball State releases 2010 schedule; team to play 6 non-conference road games

Anyone wanting to see the Ball State University soccer team play a home match better do so early in the season — or they will be waiting a while.

The Cardinals announced their 2010 scheduled Tuesday, which features the team opening the season with two home games before playing on the road for almost one month.

Ball State will open its season with home games against Xavier University on Aug. 20 and Indiana State University on Aug. 22. After that opening weekend, the Cardinals will conclude their non-conference schedule with six road games, including games against the University of Illinois on Aug. 29 and Western Kentucky University on Sept. 10.

Ball State will return to the BSU Soccer Field to play Western Michigan University in its Mid-American Conference opener Sept. 24.

For the conference season, the MAC will now be split into a West Division and East Division. In previous seasons, MAC soccer did not have divisions and the top eight teams in the conference advanced to the MAC Tournament.

Similar to MAC play in other sports, Ball State will be in the MAC West. The team will also close out its schedule on a three-game homestand against divisional opponents Eastern Michigan University on Oct. 22, Central Michigan University on Oct. 24 and the University of Toledo on Oct. 28.

The Cardinals will play eight home games this season — two more home games than they played in 2009. This is also the first time in three years that it will open its season at home.

Ball State finished last season in 10th place in the MAC and failed make the conference tournament for the third time in the program's 11-year history. Following the season, Michael Lovett was fired as head coach and replaced with Craig Roberts, who was previously the head coach for the University of Tennessee at Martin.
